Basic Mahjong Supplies

Basic Mahjong Supplies

If you've ever liked a post on social media related to Mahjong, you're probably inundated with ads for all sorts of Mahjong-related items: tiles, mats (even floating mats!), line readers, pajamas and more. At first glance, it all seems very expensive - but it doesn't have to be!

I will share the basic Mahjong supplies I bought. In my next blog post, I'll share some of the extra bougie things I've bought. Those are things you definitely don't NEED, but you just might WANT them.

Back to the basics: I bought this very basic set of tiles and racks on Amazon (and the links below are referral links, so I may be compensated for your purchase): https://amzn.to/4tVGDt6. This is the same set my sister got - we both like the wooden pushers.

I also bought this mat on Amazon: https://amzn.to/43iKzsN

One thing NOT to buy on Amazon the annual National Mah Jongg Society annual rule card. There are so many fake cards out there you would be lucky to get a real card! If the person who taught you didn't have a card to sell you, you can go to the National Mah Jongg Society directly and order one: National Mah Jongg League.

Mah Jongg Made Easy is a great booklet sold in the online NMJL store. It's worth getting a copy of the official rules right from the source!

So the basic things you need are:

  • Set of tiles & racks
  • Mat
  • The official NMJL card for the current year

You do also need a square table. An oblong dining room table won't cut it! You can use a card table if you have one. If you want to get REALLY fancy, you can buy a table that will shuffle the tiles for you! These tables come with their own set of tiles that you have to use for the shuffler to work correctly: https://amzn.to/4dLo30y. I don't have one of those, so if you get one, please invite me over to play Mahjong!

If you have room to spare and money to burn, this is an even fancier option: https://amzn.to/4wK1xOe

Here's a floating Mahjong mat if you have a pool: https://amzn.to/4f6ZWMb

So many cool things!

Okay, so those last few items weren't "basic" but they're fun and you should know they exist!

Are there any other things on your "basics" list? If so, let me know in the comments!

If you're ready for the more bougie items you can buy, check out my next blog!
