About Mahjong for Makindu
I am a board member of the Makindu Children's Program, a U.S. based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises money for the Makindu Children's Center in Makindu, Kenya.
As a board member, and someone who has been to the center (in 2024), I want to raise money and spread awareness that this amazing organization exists!
The thing I love about Makindu Children's Center is that the children live with guardians in the community rather than being in a physical orphanage. The children benefit from being in the community, and the community benefits in many ways. The guardians are trained on Income Generating Activities and have the opportunity to have chickens and goats to supplement their household.
How is this connected to Mahjong?
I took three Mahjong lessons with my sister and was instantly hooked. With Mahjong growing so quickly in popularity, I saw an opportunity to teach others, build community, and support Makindu at the same time. My hope is to host future fundraising tournaments—but for now, I’m starting by helping more friends learn to play.
